SU-85 production was stopped because T-34-85 medium tank entered mass production in the spring of 1944, and there was no point in continuing production of a tank destroyer with the similar gun.

SU-100 tank destroyer, armed with the 100 mm D-10S gun replaced SU-85 on production lines. However, problems with the availability of 100 mm gun and ammo lead to production of SU-100 chassis with 85 mm gun, thicker frontal armor, and commander’s cupola, instead.

And this is how stopgap SU-85M appeared in September 1944…
